Media Savvy. Or not...
The last two days have been spent trying to update various social media accounts, as well as this website. I think it is easy for the self employed to underestimate just how many additional skills are needed beyond the primary 'This is what my business does' skills. If you were to ask me what I do, I would say that I am a jewellery designer and craftsperson. In reality however, I am also an accountant, a stock taker, a publicist, an administrator, a web designer, a social media manager, a manufacturer, a jewellery repairer, a negotiator, a business owner, an employee, a graphic designer, a packaging manufacturer, a printer., mechanic, IT technician... the list really does go on!
Some days it is easier to juggle all these hats than others. I admit, that I am not always good at the 'boring' stuff.. you know, paperwork. Yawn... I want to spend my time making and imagining, but these boring elements of self employment are just as important as the main event and so after filing Tax Returns in January, in February I have turned my eye to my website. I don't think any of the changes I have made are going to be revolutionary - I've tried to go with tweaks here and there, but hopefully, there are a few more active links to items available in my Etsy shop, photographs have been updated (you'll spot that the photograph of me on the 'About' page is now from the last decade!) and I have put in some affiliate links to the professional organisations of which I am a member, including my hallmark registration with Edinburgh Assay Office.
In particular, you may notice the Guild of Jewellery Designers logo emblazoned across my website. I have been a member for some time, but it is only now that I have been able to work out how to add the Guild's logo to my website!! Indeed, I have even added a hyperlink to each of the logos, so that you can, if you wish, click on them and be whisked away to the GoJD website to find out more about the benefits they offer to both consumers and jewellers. If you are a fellow jewellery designer and seller, I can heartily recommend membership - there are many benefits.
Tomorrow I shall return to wrestling with packaging & stationery design and manufacture. I think it is fair to say that today has not gone well on that front. I have a complicated and temperamental machine to subdue. It shouldn't be that complicated, but it is! Who knew making a few 'please review your purchase' stickers would cause such frustration?!
In the meantime, please do take a peek at my Etsy shop links - I have been quietly adding a few new designs to the range.
